Day of the talking stone
On December 7, 2025, the RiesKraterMuseum hosted an “Day of the talking stone.” Visitors had the opportunity to have their own finds examined by a number of experts.
Due to high demand, there were some waiting times for visitors, and with the exception of the lunch break, the experts were continuously busy identifying finds, making assessments, and discussing with visitors, which often led to inspiring insights for both sides. In addition to microscopes, a rock saw at ZERIN was also used for the examinations by Roland Schumacher (RKM).
Dieter Heinlein, Dr. Karl Wimmer, Dr. Oliver Sachs and Gisela Pösges were recruited as geoscience experts for the event. The panel of experts was supported by Anna Klein (RKM) and the initiator of the event “Day of the talking stone” Dr. Frank Trixler (RKM). Karin Heck (RKM) also consulted with Dr. Karl Wimmer on archaeologically interesting bone finds, which were brought in by visitors too for examination.
The high demand and the intensive exchange between visitors and experts made it clear that the goal of further developing the RiesKraterMuseum as a place of encounter and exchange between laypeople, collectors, and scientific experts was very successfully achieved with the new event format “Day of the talking stone“.
